As winter weather draws near, Hampstead Norreys Parish Council is reminding residents of their responsibilities as riparian owners – a legal term for those who own land adjacent to a watercourse, such as the River Pang.
If the Pang runs through or borders your property, you are likely responsible for maintaining that section of the waterway. This includes:
- Keeping the channel clear of obstructions like fallen branches, litter, or excessive vegetation
- Ensuring water can flow freely to prevent flooding
- Supporting biodiversity by maintaining healthy riverbanks
Neglecting these duties can lead to blocked culverts, increased flood risk, and damage to habitats. With autumn leaves falling and winter rains on the horizon, now is the time to act.
Please inspect your stretch of the Pang and carry out any necessary maintenance before the colder months set in. If you’re unsure about your responsibilities, you can find guidance on the West Berkshire Council website: Responsibilities: ditches and riparian owners
Together, we can keep the Pang safe, clean, and flowing for everyone.
